What makes a cheap email verification API cost more than advertised?
The advertised unit rate is a starting point, not a bill. Three things move it before the invoice arrives: a surcharge on the addresses that are hardest to resolve, an exclusion that may or may not touch anything you use, and a minimum purchase that overrides the unit rate entirely. These are the three things worth reading the pricing page for.

A catch-all result can cost ten extra credits
DeBounce meters validation in credits. A standard validation is 1 credit. Resolving a catch-all further is an optional step at 10 credits per email, applied only to addresses already flagged catch-all. An address in that bucket costs eleven times a standard check, not one.

On ZeroBounce the core verdict is not gated: Freemium accounts get the same validation engine. What Freemium excludes is the surrounding deliverability tooling, specifically Activity Data, warmup, and DMARC monitoring. If you only need the verdict, that exclusion may cost you nothing.

Is a cheaper email verifier less accurate?
Price and accuracy are separate axes. A catch-all domain accepts mail for every address, so the SMTP handshake alone cannot separate a real mailbox from a fake one, and many providers return an uncertain verdict there. Some resolve catch-alls by other means, usually at extra cost: DeBounce charges 10 extra credits for that step. Microsoft-hosted domains frequently return unknown across providers because Microsoft blocks standard SMTP verification probes.
