  1. 1

    VoIP, non-fixed

Non-fixed VoIP numbers come from apps and online services and are not tied to an address.

  2. 2

    Ported from Lumen to Twilio

Lumen holds the range. The number was ported to Twilio, a virtual number provider (CPaaS). For a ported US number, line type and carrier type describe the current operator.

  3. 3

    SMS capable

Trueguard marks non-fixed VoIP as SMS capable, so SMS capable is Yes.

How to check if a number is VoIP

1

Type the number

Start with + and the country code. A leading 00 is read as +.
2

Press Validate

The result appears under the box.
3

Read line type and VoIP type

Line type says VoIP or not. For VoIP numbers, VoIP type says fixed or non-fixed.

What the result means

A VoIP number carries calls over the internet instead of a mobile network or a phone line. It comes from a real number range and makes and takes calls like other numbers. Every field and value is in the API documentation.

Fixed VoIP vs non-fixed VoIP

VoIP type splits VoIP numbers in two. Carrier type shows what kind of operator serves the number.

Fixed VoIP

fixed
VoIP tied to an address. Trueguard marks fixed VoIP as not SMS capable.

Non-fixed VoIP

nonFixed
Numbers from apps and online services, not tied to an address. Trueguard marks them as SMS capable.

Virtual number provider (CPaaS)

cpaasVirtual
Serves numbers from a communications platform such as Twilio.

Why a number from a mobile or landline range can show as VoIP

Number ranges are assigned to one operator. When a number is ported, it moves to another operator and the range stays with the first. If that operator is a VoIP provider, the number shows as VoIP.

Original carrierLumen

Holds the number range. Shown for any country where the data is known.

Ported
Current carrierTwilio

Serves the number now. From the US porting database, so US numbers only.

Current carrier and porting come from the US porting database. Outside the US, line type follows the number range.

Got a call from a number and want to know who it is?

The checker tells you if a number is VoIP and which operator serves it. It does not tell you who called. Trueguard does not do reverse phone lookup, and a VoIP result on its own does not mean a call was a scam.

What a VoIP check can't tell you

A VoIP check reads numbering and porting data. These questions need other data.

Who owns the number

The lookup returns operator data, not a person. Trueguard does not do reverse phone lookup.

Whether someone answers

There is no HLR lookup and no contact with the network. Valid means the number belongs to a real range.

Whether a caller is honest

The result describes the line, not the person using it.

Porting outside the US

Outside the US, line type comes from the number range. A number ported to a VoIP provider can still show the type of its range.

What businesses use VoIP detection for

Challenge non-fixed VoIP at signup

A second check instead of a block. See SMS pumping prevention for how to use it.

Skip SMS to lines that cannot receive it

Landline and fixed VoIP numbers show SMS capable No. The line type shows which numbers those are.

Spot virtual (CPaaS) numbers

Carrier type shows cpaasVirtual for numbers served by a communications platform.

Check for VoIP from your code

The same data comes from POST /v2/phone/validation, one number per request. Read line.type, line.voipType, line.carrierType and line.smsCapable. 100 checks a month are free with no card. The Standard plan is $49.99 a month for 20,000 checks, then $0.0025 a check. Median response is under 500 ms.

Questions about VoIP number checks.

Anything missing? Contact support or read the documentation.

How can I tell if a phone number is VoIP?

You cannot tell from the digits alone. A lookup reads numbering data, and porting data for US numbers, and returns the line type. Enter the number above with + and the country code.

Can you find out who owns a VoIP number?

No. The checker returns operator data, not a person. Trueguard does not offer reverse phone lookup or caller names.

Is a VoIP number a real phone number?

Yes. VoIP numbers come from real number ranges. Valid means the number matches its country's numbering plan and belongs to a real range.

What is the difference between fixed and non-fixed VoIP?

Fixed VoIP is tied to an address. Non-fixed VoIP comes from apps and online services and is not tied to an address. Trueguard marks non-fixed VoIP as SMS capable and fixed VoIP as not. When the data does not say, VoIP type is Unknown.

Can a VoIP number receive SMS verification codes?

Trueguard marks non-fixed VoIP as SMS capable, like mobile, and fixed VoIP and landlines as not. When the VoIP type is unknown, SMS capable is left empty.

Should I block VoIP numbers at signup?

A blanket block also turns away people who use VoIP as their main number. One approach is to send non-fixed VoIP and virtual (CPaaS) numbers to a second check before you send a code.

Does the checker call or text the number?

No. There is no call, no SMS and no HLR lookup, so it cannot tell you whether someone will answer.

Why does a mobile or landline number show as VoIP?

Because it was ported to a VoIP provider. +1 415 992 9960 comes from a Lumen range and is served by Twilio now. Porting data covers US numbers only, so outside the US the line type follows the number range.

Does it work for numbers outside the US?

Line type, VoIP type, carrier type and original carrier work worldwide where the data is known. Current carrier and porting cover US numbers only. Canadian numbers do not get them.

Is the VoIP checker free, and can I check many numbers?

5 checks a day in the browser with no account. A free API key gives 100 checks a month with no card. Above that, the Standard plan is $49.99 a month for 20,000 checks, then $0.0025 a check. The page checks one number at a time. For more, use the API.
