Comparison

Twilio Lookup alternative: pricing vs Trueguard.

Trueguard returns validity, line type, carrier, porting, disposable history and SMS destination risk in one call, for $49.99 a month for 20,000 checks. At Twilio, line type costs $0.008 per lookup and SMS pumping risk costs $0.025 per lookup outside North America. Twilio also runs checks against the carrier network, which Trueguard does not.

Every Twilio figure comes from Twilio's own pricing page and docs, read 2 November 2026. Their page says pricing is current as of October 2026.

What 10,000, 100,000 and 1,000,000 checks cost.

ChecksTwilio line typeTwilio line type + SMS pumpingTrueguard
10,000$80$330$49.99
100,000$800$3,300$249.99
1,000,000$8,000$33,000$2,499.99 at list overage (Custom plan from 500,000)

Twilio is $0.008 per line type request and $0.033 with SMS pumping risk ($0.008 plus $0.025). Trueguard is $49.99 plus $0.0025 for each check above 20,000.

North American numbers get Twilio's pumping score free, so for US-only traffic the two Twilio columns are the same. These are list prices, and Twilio enterprise contracts can negotiate them.

Trueguard's pumping signal is country level. The Trueguard column also includes disposable history, range risk and destination risk.

Where Twilio Lookup is the better choice.

Stated plainly, because you will find it out anyway.

Line status from the carrier network

Line Status asks the network whether a line is active and reachable. Trueguard reads numbering and carrier data and does not contact the network. Line Status is in Public Beta and may not return data from every network.

SIM swap and call forwarding

SIM Swap returns the date of the last swap, and Call Forwarding shows unconditional forwarding. Both are in Private Beta, and Trueguard has neither.

Identity Match

Identity Match compares the name and address a user gives you with carrier and authoritative data, and returns a match level per field. Trueguard has no identity check.

US caller name and reassigned numbers

Caller Name returns the CNAM name and type for US numbers. Reassigned Number tells you if a US number changed hands, which matters for TCPA compliance. Trueguard offers neither.

A per-number SMS pumping score

Twilio scores each number from 0 to 100 using Twilio network data and Verify Fraud Guard signals. Trueguard rates the destination country only.

One account and one bill with Verify and Messaging

If you already send through Twilio, Lookup sits in the same account and on the same invoice as Verify and Messaging.

What Trueguard returns that Lookup does not.

Disposable now and before

isDisposable is true for numbers listed on public receive-SMS sites in the last 30 days, and previouslyDisposable covers 31 to 180 days. The data comes from Trueguard's own monitoring of those sites.

Carrier type

line.carrierType separates mobile operators from virtual ones. The example number +14159929960 is served by Twilio today, was issued by Lumen, and has been ported, so carrierType is cpaasVirtual.

Range risk

risk.rangeRisk is low, elevated or high, based on how many numbers in the same number block appeared on public receive-SMS sites in the last 90 days.

US signals

STIR/SHAKEN status of the carrier for US numbers, block age for US and Canadian numbers, and FTC Do Not Call complaints from the last 90 days for +1 numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Something out of date? Tell us and we will correct it.

How much does Twilio Lookup cost per request?

It depends on the data package. Basic formatting and validation is free. Line Type Intelligence is $0.008 per request. SMS Pumping Risk is $0.025 per request outside North America and free in North America. Line Status is $0.007 per request, falling to $0.00385 above 10 million requests. Caller Name is $0.01, Identity Match is $0.10 and varies by country, and SIM Swap is priced through Twilio sales. These figures come from Twilio's pricing page, read on 2 November 2026.

Is Twilio Lookup free?

Partly. Twilio states that basic phone number formatting and validation have no per-query charge. The paid packages, such as Line Type Intelligence and SMS Pumping Risk, are billed per request, and the pricing page lists no free monthly allowance for them. Trueguard's free tier is 100 checks a month with every field included, no card required.

Which Lookup features are free and which are paid?

Only basic formatting and validation is free. Every other package is billed per request: Line Type Intelligence, SMS Pumping Risk outside North America, Line Status, Caller Name, Identity Match, Reassigned Number, SIM Swap and Call Forwarding. Twilio's Caller Name documentation says a request is billed even when no data comes back, so a lookup on a number without a name still costs $0.01.

Is Line Type Intelligence pricing different by country?

Twilio lists one flat price of $0.008 per request and publishes no volume tiers. Canada needs special approval before you can query it. Twilio says enterprise accounts can negotiate committed-use contracts with its sales team, so the price you pay at high volume can differ from the list price.

What do 100,000 line type lookups cost on Twilio and on Trueguard?

On Twilio, 100,000 Line Type Intelligence requests cost $800 at list price. Add SMS Pumping Risk outside North America and the total is $3,300. On Trueguard, 100,000 checks cost $249.99 on the Standard plan ($49.99 for the first 20,000, then $0.0025 per check), and every field is included. Trueguard's SMS destination risk is a country level signal, and Twilio's SMS pumping score is per number.

What is a good alternative to Twilio Lookup?

Trueguard fits when you need validity, line type, carrier, disposable history and SMS destination risk at one flat price: $49.99 a month for 20,000 checks. Stay on Twilio Lookup when you need checks against the carrier network, such as Line Status, SIM Swap, Identity Match, US Caller Name or Reassigned Number.

Can Trueguard detect VoIP numbers like Twilio?

Yes. Trueguard returns line.type as voip and line.voipType as fixed or nonFixed. It also returns line.carrierType, which is cpaasVirtual for communications platform numbers. The example number +14159929960 is a non-fixed VoIP number that belongs to Twilio today and was ported from Lumen, its original carrier.

Does Trueguard check whether a number is live or SIM swapped?

No. Trueguard has no HLR lookup, no line status and no SIM swap check. A valid number means it matches the numbering plan of its country. If you need to know whether a line is reachable or was recently swapped, use Twilio Line Status or SIM Swap.

How does Trueguard's SMS pumping signal compare to Twilio's?

Trueguard's risk.smsDestinationRisk rates the SMS pumping risk of the number's country as low, elevated or high. Twilio's SMS Pumping Risk returns a score from 0 to 100 for each number, built from Twilio network data. Twilio says not to use it for US and Canadian numbers and not to cache the score. The two measure different things.

Do I need a Twilio account to use Trueguard?

No. Trueguard uses its own API key, which you get from a free account, and it works with any SMS provider. Trueguard does not sell SMS, so it has no reason to keep you sending them.

Can I use Trueguard with Twilio Verify?

Yes. Check the number with Trueguard first and send the code only for numbers that pass. Twilio Verify costs $0.05 per successful verification plus channel fees, for example $0.0083 per US SMS, as read on 2 November 2026. Dropping invalid and disposable numbers before the send removes those costs for numbers that were never going to verify.

Run your own numbers through both.

100 checks a month free, no card. Send the same numbers to Lookup and to Trueguard and compare the answers before you pay anyone.
